Getting an orchid to rebloom seems tricky at first, as you can have a healthy-looking orchid with big green leaves and a healthy root system, but it just doesn’t seem to flower. The shift is knowing that your orchid isn’t unwell; it just doesn’t have the specific environmental trigger to stimulate flowering, or perhaps it has not been pruned in the correct way.
Here’s what I found works from my own experiments and experience.
1. The Missing Trigger: A Night-Time Temperature Drop

For at least 2 years, my Phalaenopsis orchid (the most popular houseplant orchid) was on my kitchen windowsill sitting at a constant 72°F (22°C). It had lovely-looking foliage but no flowers. So I did some research, and I found out my orchid is missing a natural seasonal cue, so I did a simple test one October.
I left one of my orchids in my warm living room and moved an identical orchid to an east-facing windowsill, where night temperature dips to around 58–62°F (14–16°C)
After 3 weeks of consistently cool evenings, the orchid on the windowsill grew its first flower spike in 2 years (as per my research said it would), whereas the orchid in the warmer room kept its vegetation healthy but didn’t flower.
Why this worked…This is due to a phenomenon called thermoperidism (as botanists call it). The Phalaenopsis orchid needs a sustained 10–15°F decrease in evening temperature for at least 2 but ideally 3 weeks to trigger the growth of a new flower spike (this mimics the shift in seasonal temperatures that orchids use to know when to flower). If an orchid is kept at a steady temperature all year round, it has no cue that this is the right time to flower.
How to Use This to Promote Blooms…
- Aim for an evening temperature of between 58°F and 65°F for ideally 3 weeks in the early Fall/Autumn.
- I found that a windowsill (without a radiator underneath works best.
- Avoid leaving your orchid anywhere that gets below 55°F and keep the leaves away from touching the glass as its signifcantly colder than the ambient temperature of the house.
2. Where You Cut the Old Spike Changes What You Get Next

When the last blooms dropped off my orchid last spring, I decided to do a test with the two most debated pruning methods I read about, side by side.
On orchid A, I pruned the spent stem to about half an inch above the second node from the base, whereas on orchid B I trimmed the entire stem down to the leaves, removing it completely.
The results were different, not just in timing but also in what the plant produced…
- The node prune (Orchid A) produced a secondary branch bloom in 5 weeks, which is fast, but interestingly the trade-off was smaller flowers, fewer of them, and the bloom cycle only lasted 4 weeks.
- The base prune (Orchid B) took around 7 months of waiting with no spike at all, but because the orchid spent its time storeing is energy instead of producing, a rushed secondary bloom, when the flower spike finally did emerge, it produced one massive primary stem with 14 flowers and lasted around 3 months.
My rule of thumb now…Use the node prune only on a robust, clearly vigorous plant where you want a quicker (but smaller) encore bloom, whereas I use the base prune on a younger, stressed or recovering orchid, and whilst it costs you months of patience, the result is a stronger bloom when it does appear.
3. Telling a Real Flower Spike From “Just Another Root”
Every fall/autumn I see in forums about orchids, photos asking “is this a new flower spike or an aerial root?”After caring for orchids for years, I have a simple visual check that takes out the guesswork within about 10 days of first noticing the growth.

If you’re staring at a new growth and it has a rounded, shiny “bullet” tip heading downward, then it’s almost certainly a root; however, if it’s flatter, notched like a mitten, and pointed up toward the light source, that’s your spike.
4. Don’t Undo Your Progress With the Ice Cube Method

Reblooming only works if the orchid stays healthy and in good condition. I decided to test the popular online orchid myth, which is that you can water orchids with just 3 ice cubes a week, which is a well-intentioned tactic to avoid overwatering, but in practice it does more harm than good. To test this hack, I potted 2 orchids in clear plastic pots filled with pine bark-based orchid mix, one watered with ice cubes and the other with a 10-minute soak in a basin of water.
The orchid that was watered with ice suffered damage to its roots. Phalaenopsis orchids are tropical epiphytes that are acclimated to warm rain in the 75–85°F range, and the direct ice to roots causes cell collapse, which turned healthy roots to brown mush. It also did not hydrate the potting medium evenly (which should always be the goal with watering); as the ice melted, it dampened the surface of the wood bark, then evaporated without really reaching the roots.
The best method is, of course, to soak your orchid in a basin of water for 10 minutes, as this gives the medium time to draw up moisture and ensures the medium is evenly moist, rather than some roots suffering drought and, of course, without freeze damage. This is unequivocally the better way to water your orchids.
Putting It Together
Reblooming comes down to 3 things working together, which are the seasonal cue through nighttime temperature cycles, choosing the right pruning method for the orchid’s maturity and watering your orchid properly. I don’t use any special fertiliser or exotic technique, and still get great results.
