In my experience, succulents fail indoors usually because of a mismatch between the desert adaptations of the succulent and a typical household environment. Keeping them compact, vibrant and preventing any rot requires managing 3 core variables, which are…
- Good soil drainage
- The right light
- Watering by cellular thirst cues rather than a schedule.
1. Substrate Engineering & The Evaporation Cycle

Standard potting compost that you’d use on your other houseplants retains too much moisture around the roots of your succulent (which can risk root rot, as succulents are desert dwellers). I’ve found that some commercial succulent soils are very heavy with peat or coir-based, so that the top layer dries quickly, the bottom half remains boggy such causes root rot.

The 50/50 Inorganic Substrate Formula
To ensure your succulents stay healthy at the roots, we need a soil blend that prioritises aeration and drainage. What I found works best is
- 50% Inorganic gritty potting mix (I use either horticultural grit or special succulent and cacti substrate). I now avoid using sand as it is not chunky enough to create the right aerated soil structure.
- 50% Potting soil or composted bark. This provides the nutrients and complements the grit to create the optimal soil structure.

Experiment: 14-Day Substrate Evaporation Test
I did a little test to demonstrate how the substrate composition affects the moisture levels around the root zone with 2 identical 1 cm (3 inches) unglazed terracotta pots, both of which contained Echeveria, which were weighed every day under the same controlled conditions (same temperature, light intensity, and humidity).

The results… The 50:50 gritty mix reached complete dryness within 5 days, whereas the standard commercial potting mix retained moisture around the roots for as long as 2 weeks, which is the cause of root rot pathogens (Pythium and Phytophthora) that cause your succulents to rot.
2. Light Calibration & Preventing Etiolation
Indoor succulents need a minimum light intensity of 2,000 foot candles, which is approximately 20,000 to 25,000 lux for 6 to 8 hours every day to stay compact and maintain the tight rosette formation that we all love, as well as the red or pink flushes on succulents such as jade plants.

- Window filtration losses: I did the research, and most modern double-glazed and Low-E window glass reflects or absorbs up to 40 to 50% of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). If we place our succulents 1 meter away from a window, it can reduce the usable light by over 70% compared to it being placed directly on the windowsill.
- Signs of light starvation (Etiolation): This is where the succulent isn’t getting enough light, so its leaves start to curl (which is to increase its surface area to catch more light, the leaf colour turns a pale light green, and the stem elongates with wider spacing between each leaf node.
- Acclimation protocol: When moving your succulent to a location with greater light intensity, what I find works best is to increase the exposure by 30 minutes every 3 days because sudden shifts from an area of shade to bright sun cause sunburn on the tissue of the succulent leaves. You can also use grow lights, a great way to support your succulent’s health and prevent it from stretching, especially if you live in an apartment and perhaps don’t have a sunny windowsill for your succulents. It can also be good during winter, which is when I find succulents are more likely to grow leggy and out of control!
3. Hydration Mechanics: The Bottom-Soak & Leaf-Reading Method
This is the most important piece of advice in my article…Never water your succulents on a fixed schedule or even by how the surface of the soil feels. Instead, what we need to do is water when the succulent gives you cues of internal dehydration.

Reading Leaf Turgidity
- Find the lowest mature leaves just above the soil line.
- I then gently squeeze the side of the leaf for the following cues…
- Turgid leaf (Hydrated): If the leaf is hard, thick and doesn’t have any give to it, then do not water, as the leaf is already storing sufficient moisture. The leaf is hard, thick, and has zero give. Do not water.
- Deflated (Thirsty): If your leaf feels soft, has a bit of a leathery, wrinkled appearance and looks a little deflated, it’s time to water.
- Edemic (Over-watered): If your succulent leaf looks translucent, yellow and feels mushy, what has happened is that the cell walls have ruptured from excessive water pressure.
The Submersion Technique
I find that top watering the rosette varieties of succulents (Echeveria, Sempervivum, Graptopetalum) causes water to be trapped in the centre, which can cause fungal rot. So instead, this is what I do now.
- Procedure: I place my terracotta pot into a basin filled with about 6 inches of tepid water.
- Duration: I allow the potting soil to draw moisture upward via capillary action for around 30–45 minutes until the top dressing feels cool and slightly damp.
- Drainage: I remove the pot and allow the excess water to drain away for around 15 minutes before placing it back into its saucer or display spot. It is important to never let the pot sit in standing drainage water.
4. Farina Preservation & Routine Maintenance
You may have noticed that many succulent species produce a delicate, powdery white coating on their leaves called farina (epicuticular wax). This is very important for the health of your succulents!
- Function of Farina: The farina is like a natural sunscreen against the incredibly harsh sun in its native environment. It also acts as a way to resist fungal spores and bead water away from the leaf’s surface.
- Maintenance: The farina is very important, and it does not regenerate quickly if you remove it, so whatever you do, avoid misting your succulents or wiping like you might with big, glossy monstera leaves.
- Dust Removal: If dust does collect on your succulent, what I like to do is use a soft, dry makeup brush to lightly remove any visible dust, while keeping the farina intact (which should stay in place as it’s slightly waxy and adhesive).
- Sanitary Leaf Clearing: As the bottom leaves naturally dry into paper-thin, crisp brown husk, I pull them laterally with tweezers very gently to detach cleanly from the stem node, but if they don’t come easily, I leave them for now. The reason I do this is that leaving decaying organic matter around a moist base creates entry points for mealybugs (Pseudococcidae).
5. Diagnostic Troubleshooting Matrix

Healthy succulent care indoors centres on deliberate neglect between each bout of watering and by utilising porous substrates that dry within 3 to 5 days, maintaining high-intensity light on window sills, and reading leaf turgor rather than relying on topsoil checks; root-rot issues are virtually eliminated.
