The first time a leaf on my favourite Phalaenopsis orchid turned bright yellow, I was about to throw the plant out. “Why is my orchid turning yellow?” is one of the most common questions relating to orchids asked online. The answer is it depends on which leaf and exactly where the yellowing starts, and how the leaf feels. I have seen this play out across many bloom cycles of my own orchid collection, and I’ve found that yellowing leaves actually follow a very specific, readable pattern, and we just need to know what to look out for…
1. Start With Location: Top-Down, Bottom-Up, or Middle-Out
Yelloing isn’t just one problem; it usually has 3 differing causes, and they are distinguishable by where they start on the orchid.
Bottom-up yellowing (normal ageing). This happens with a single older leaf turning yellow, often starting at the tip and slowly working back down towards the stem in a 3 or 4 week period. This is your orchid recycling its mobile nutrients such as nitrogen from an ageing leaf and diverting it to new top growth or even a flower spike. This isn’t a problem, and you can just leave it alone. Eventually the leaf turns a papery brown, and it can drop off with some light persuasion.
Middle-out yellowing (stem or crown rot). This one is more concerning. This is when the yellowing starts at the base of a leaf right where is meets the main stem and it can turn black of soft with a rottingg texturre within days which means water has pooled in the leaf azil and has cause bacterial rot. Action: this symptom requires immediat attention with this needs immediate attention with an isopropyl alcohol treatment on the affected area, and better airflow going forward so water doesn’t sit in the crown.
Top-down leaf yellowing (sunburn or light stress). If the upper leaves are fading to a pale yellow or developing dry, white, bleached patches on the top-facing surface, then this is almost certainly too much direct sunlight rather than a watering problem.
If we learn to read where the yellowing on the leaves starts, then we can diagnose the problem and treat it.
2. The Root Rot Paradox: Why an “Underwatered-Looking” Orchid Can Actually Be Overwatered

I once brought home 3 orchids that were sold off cheap as they had yellow, almost leathery leaves that were flopping. The bark on top felt bone dry, which you’d think meant underwatering, but when I unpotted them, the real problem was that the roots were essentially wrapped in a very dense peat moss sponge with poor drainage. Whilst the bark always dried within 2 days, the hidden peat sponge stayed wet for a long time, which quietly caused the roots to rot.
This is what I call the root rot paradox, as an overwatered orchid can look dehydrated. Once the orchid’s roots rot from excess moisture, they turn squishy and brown, which reduces their ability to transport water and nutrients to different plant tissues. The leaves then turn a leathery yellow as they are thirsty, which can cause well-meaning houseplant owners to compound the problem with more watering.
The fix: Don’t judge moisture by how the bark looks, but ideally do as I do, which is to house your orchid in a clear plastic pot (that sits in a larger decorative outer pot). Look at the roots. They should be green, firm and healthy after watering or a form of light grey in the days after. If any roots are mushy and rotting, then trim these roots off with a clean pair of pruners (wipe the pruners with disinfectant between each snip to prevent spreading infection. Repot the orchid in new pine bark-based potting mix. Why pine bark? The particle size of the pine bark is much larger, which allows more air around the roots to avoid problems with overwatering, and it mimics its natural conditions much better than peat moss.

3. Mineral Buildup: The Hidden Cause Most Guides Skip
After I noticed some yellow halos followed by brown dry margins on the leaf tips of my orchids, I thought it might be mineral burn rather than a watering problem, so I tested my theory. Using a basic TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) meter, my tap water measured 380 PPM. After this I flushed the potted bark with rainwater from my garden accross 3 seperate waterings and the TDS reading of the run off ddropped from over 800 PPM to 120 PPM and in the spring a new leaf growth came in without any yellowing.
This addressed the cause that most articles miss, which is to do with salt and fertiliser accumulation. As the water evaporates out of the bark, the dissolved minerals, calcium, sodium and leftover fertiliser salt get left behind. This high salt concentration in the potting medium actually reverses osmosis, pulling water backk ot of root cells and burning the root tips, which shows up above the soil line as yellowing at the leaf tips.
The fix: What I do now is to build in a monthly day in my watering where I water it with rain water with no addedd fertiziler as this helps to leech out thhe accumulated salts from the bark before they reach problematic levels.
4. The Texture Test: Why You Should Pinch the Leaf, Not Just Photograph It

Colour alone can be a bit misleading, so whenever someone sends me photos of a yellowing leaf, the first thing I ask them to do is to gently pinch the yellow leaf between their fingers as turgor pressure gives away the real cause before the leaf fully drops off.

Putting It All Together
A yellowing leaf isn’t a diagnosis but rather a symptom with at least 4 possible causes, and the fix depends on getting the diagnosis right. Before you use more water, fertiliser, or reach for the pruners, take 30 seconds to check 3 things. 1. Where the yellowing started, 2. how it feels in texture and 3. what the roots actually look like under the bark. With these 3 checks, you’ll land on the right cause rather than guessing.
